The share of generic drugs in Japan in FY2012 was 25.8% on a volume basis and 10.5% on a price basis, the Japan Generic Medicines Association (JGA) announced on June 27.
This increase is the highest since the association started using IMS data in FY2009 for generic share analyses in addition to a survey of JGA member companies. Prior to FY2009, only a survey of JGA member companies was conducted.
According to the survey relating to major generic companies and IMS data, the estimated share of generics increased every quarter: 1) 25.3% on a volume basis and 10.3% on a price basis from April to June in 2012, 2) 25.4% and 10.5% from July to September, 3) 26.1% and 10.7% from October to December, and 4) 26.5% and 10.9% from January to March 2013.
By drug administration route, the generic share was 26.3% by volume and 11.4% by price for oral medicines, 27.7% and 8.6% for injections, and 16.8% and 10.0% for topical medicines.
